The most popular way to ascend Pilatus is via the gondola lift, which departs from Kriens and takes you all the way to the summit. To experience the full journey:

  1. Board the Gondola at Kriens, station stop “Pilatusbahn”. Stay seated at the first stop, Krienseregg, to continue your ride seamlessly, or take a pause here to explore all that Pilatus has to offer.

  2. Transfer at Fräkmüntegg. Here, at the end stop of the gondola, switch to the aerial cableway, known as the "Dragon Ride," which takes you directly to the summit of Pilatus.

For those who prefer an active approach, there are hiking trails that lead partway or all the way up the mountain. Along the way, you'll encounter serene picnic spots, bubbling brooks, and breathtaking vistas.

Alternatively, you can take the world's steepest cogwheel train up to Mount Pilatus from Alpnach. It's a great option, especially when combined with a boat tour across Lake Lucerne

  2. Bring hotdogs for a BBQ. Along the hiking trails, you'll find BBQ stations equipped with free wood. Pack your own food, like hotdogs or sausages, to enjoy an alpine picnic.

  3. Pack sunscreen. Even if it’s not particularly sunny, the high altitude means stronger UV rays. Protect your skin to avoid an unexpected sunburn.

  4. Check the webcams before you go! The weather on Mount Pilatus can differ significantly from the valley below. Use the official Pilatus webcam to check the conditions at the summit (Pilatus Kulm station), Fräkmüntegg station, and Krienseregg station.
