Exploring the Engelberg Valley – A Local's Perspective
Updated: Nov 12
Switzerland is known for its breathtaking landscapes, majestic mountains, and quaint villages. One of the gems that should be on every traveler's list is the Engelberg Valley. Engelberg boasts panoramic views of towering mountains, lush green pastures, and crystal-clear rivers—it’s a paradise offering an array of activities for all kinds of adventurers.
Discover Engelberg in the Summer and Fall
Although Engelberg is famous for its winter sports, the area transforms into an outdoor haven during the summer and fal as well.My visit to Engelberg was on a Sunday, when we wanted a simple day of hiking and relaxation. Since the valley is not too far from Luzern, it felt like the perfect quick getaway.
Surrounded by Nature's Beauty
We parked in the car park of the Fürenalp cable car, which is only 5 CHF to park there for the whole day. Stepping out of the car, we were instantly surrounded by nature’s beauty. Small, magical waterfalls dotted the landscape, creating a peaceful ambiance.
The colors of fall were everywhere, with the leaves turning vibrant shades of orange, red, and gold. Even though it had rained the night before, and the trails were a bit wet and slippery, the experience was still well worth it. A word of caution is to be prepared with good hiking shoes no matter the season!
From the parking area, a variety of clearly marked hiking trails awaited us. Some were easier and perfect for families, while others were more challenging, winding through the higher parts of the mountains. Due to the wet conditions and fallen leaves, we stayed on the lower trails that day, but it was still a rewarding experience, allowing us to fully appreciate the valley's beauty.
Convenience and Comfort at Every Turn
One of the best parts of the day was how easy and comfortable everything was. As soon as we parked, there was a building right next to the lot—a small tourist center with clean, well-maintained bathrooms. This was especially convenient since facilities can sometimes be hard to find when hiking in remote areas.
There was also a gift shop inside the center, and to our surprise, it was open on a Sunday. In Switzerland, where many shops and services close on Sundays, it was refreshing to find these conveniences still available. The gift shop had a range of local items, and it felt nice to browse around before heading out for the hike.
A Culinary and Shopping Detour in Engelberg Village Resort
While many hikers might stop by Restaurant Wasserfall located on your drive in or out of the parking area for a meal or drink, we decided to take a short drive into Engelberg village resort instead to see the happenings. It was just a quick and easy drive, and surprisingly, a number of shops and cafés were also open on a Sunday. We then realized that because Engelberg is a very popular tourist destination, many of the stores and eateries cater to visitors even on days when most places in Switzerland are closed.
We found a cozy café, perfect for warming up after our hike. While us adults were boring and stuck to tea, my daughter indulged in an unforgettable treat—a hot chocolate topped with marshmallows, whipped cream, and cotton candy! It was ridiculously over-the-top, but it added an element of fun and was the perfect way to wind down.
Afterward, we wandered through a few local shops. Since it was fall, many stores were offering discounts on winter gear from the previous season, which was a great opportunity to grab some good deals. Pro tip: If you're visiting during the fall, take advantage of the sales on winter items—they offer significant savings before the winter rush begins! I got beautiful leather winter boots and a sweater for well over 50% off.
Seilpark Engelberg: An Adventure Awaits
One of the must-visit spots in the Engelberg Valley is Seilpark Engelberg, a high-ropes adventure park that promises excitement for both kids and adults. While we didn’t get the chance to try it out because it was closed due to the rain, the park looked incredibly fun.
Whether you’re seeking a family outing or an adrenaline-filled day with friends, Seilpark has something for everyone. From challenging obstacle courses to treetop views, it’s the perfect spot to unleash your adventurous side. The park is only open May through to October, and if the weather conditions seem a bit iffy, it’s best to quickly call before going.
