Day Trip from Zurich: Exploring Lindau, Germany

Updated: Sep 25

If you like cute little towns like Appenzell, Stein am Rhein, or Colmar, then Lindau is my secret tip for you. Lindau, Germany, is a picturesque town located on an island in Lake Constance. Known for its charming old town and scenic lake promenade, Lindau is a perfect day trip destination from Zurich. Its historical architecture, beautiful waterfront, and atmosphere make it one of my favorite places to visit. Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable day trip to Lindau from Zurich.

How to Get to Lindau from Zurich

By Car:

Driving from Zurich to Lindau takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Although parking on the island is limited, you can usually find a spot at Parking Lindau, conveniently located right after the bridge. From here, the old town is just a short walk away. If Parking Lindau is full, another option is Parkplatz am Karl-Bever-Platz, situated just before the bridge.

By Train:

Taking the train is a convenient and scenic option. There is a direct train from Zurich HB to Lindau, taking approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. However, it’s important to note that the train no longer goes straight to the island. It stops one station before, at Lindau-Reutin. From here, you have two options: either take a short 15-minute walk to the island or transfer to a local train for one stop, which takes just a few minutes. Despite this small change, the train remains a great way to travel, offering beautiful views of the Swiss and German countryside along the way.
