The Best Lakes to Vacation on in Switzerland

Updated: Jan 7

Switzerland boasts some of the world's most breathtaking lakes, each with its own unique scenery and unforgettable experiences. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration, you'll find the perfect lake destination. Let us guide you through Switzerland's finest lakes for your next vacation.

1. Lake Geneva – Cosmopolitan Charm Meets Alpine Beauty

Château de Chillon on Lake Geneva

What's Special About It?

Lake Geneva, Switzerland's largest lake, combines stunning Alpine vistas with cultural richness and scenic vineyards. The lake stretches from the vibrant city of Geneva to the enchanting town of Montreux, making it an ideal destination for every type of traveler.

Why Visit?

  • Visit the Château de Chillon, an iconic lakeside castle.

  • Explore the Lavaux Vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Enjoy the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in summer.

  • Take a scenic paddle steamer cruise.

  • Visit Evian-les-Bains on the French side, home to the famous Evian water fountain (bring empty bottles to fill up at the fountain in the town center for free).

  • Visit the nearby Gruyère cheese factory (scroll down to 4) and its scenic old town.

  • Take a day trip to charming Annecy, France.

  • Explore Lausanne and the Olympic Museum.

  • Take the train up to Les Pléiades

Best Location to Stay:

  • Montreux: Fairmont Le Montreux Palace combines luxury with lake views.

  • Vevey: Stay at Grand Hotel du Lac for a boutique experience.

  • Evian-les-Bains (home of the Evian water fountain): an ideal base to explore the southern side of the lake, especially for budget-conscious travelers.

My Personal Take

Lake Geneva is definitely a place where you can easily spend a week with family and friends. It has a wonderful southern atmosphere. There's plenty to do in and around the lake—I highly recommend walking through the Lavaux vineyards, visiting Evian, and exploring Château de Chillon. If I had a week or more to spend in one location, I would choose Lake Geneva. On previous trips, we stayed in Evian to explore the southern side of the lake (Evian fountain, Geneva, Annecy and Chamonix), and we stayed in Vevey to visit Montreux, Château Chillon and walk through the vineyards all the way to Lausanne.

2. Lake Lucerne – Storybook Scenery and Rich History

View over Lake Lucerne and the Alps

What’s Special About It?

Lake Lucerne is surrounded by fjord-like landscapes, charming villages, and historical landmarks. It offers access to the iconic Pilatus and Rigi mountains, making it ideal for adventure and relaxation.

Why Visit?

  • Ride a paddle steamer across the lake.

  • Discover Lucerne's Old Town, Chapel Bridge, and Lion Monument.

  • Take the cogwheel train to Mount Pilatus.

  • Hike up Mount Rigi.

  • Explore quiet lakeside villages like Weggis and Vitznau.

  • Take the world's steepest cogwheel train to Stoos and hike the Klingenstock to Fronalpstock ridge.

  • Hike to Hotel Villa Honegg( or stay there if you can afford it:-) ) for the famous Instagram-worthy view over Lake Lucerne.

  • Visit Aeschbach Chocolatier AG (3rd from top) for chocolate tasting and a museum tour.

  • Lucerne is a great base for a day trip to Interlaken (via scenic train) or Engelberg with its cable car up to Mount Titlis

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lucerne City: Hotel des Balances offers lakeside luxury in the heart of the city.

  • Weggis: Vitznauerhof Hotel is perfect for a serene retreat.

My Personal Take

Lake Lucerne is perfect for a long weekend or a 4-day trip. I recommend starting your day with a hike or a trip up one of the mountains, either Rigi or Pilatus, for stunning views over the lake. Be sure to check the webcams beforehand to ensure clear skies for the best views. For hiking, I loved the route from Stansstad to Hotel Villa Honegg, then to the Bürgenstock elevator (yes, an elevator up the mountain!). Another favorite is the Stoos Ridge Hike, which offers incredible panoramas. Don’t miss visiting Lucerne’s Old Town, where the Chapel Bridge and Lion Monument are absolute highlights. Besides Lucerne, I also stayed in Vitznau, which is perfect for unwinding with a spa day, a refreshing swim in the lake, or a hike up Mount Rigi. Ferries from Vitznau connect you to Lucerne and other towns around the lake. While staying in Lucerne is ideal for exploring destinations further away from Lake Lucerne, Vitznau offers a more relaxing and tranquil experience.

3. Lake Brienz – Turquoise Waters and Unspoiled Nature

View over Brienz town and the Lake

What’s Special About It?

Lake Brienz is known for its vibrant turquoise waters and tranquil surroundings. It’s a haven for nature lovers and those seeking peaceful adventures.

Why Visit?

  • Visit Giessbach Falls, accessible by boat or hike.

  • Take the historic Brienz Rothorn Railway.

  • Discover the woodcarving town of Brienz.

  • Kayak or paddleboard on the crystal-clear lake.

  • perfect location for day trips to Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Jungfraujoch.

  • Take the mountain train up to Harder Kulm in Interlaken.

  • Visit Iseltwald, made famous by the Korean TV show Crash Landing on You.

  • Visit the city of Thun

  • Visit the famouse Blausee and Oeschinen Lake

Best Location to Stay:

  • Brienz: Grandhotel Giessbach, located next to the waterfalls.

  • Iseltwald: Chalet du Lac offers cozy lakeside charm.

  • Interlaken: If you prefer a busier atmosphere—positively bustling with more restaurant options, more tourists, and excellent train connections to farther destinations—this is the place for you.

Beautiful Interlaken

Personal Take:

As an outdoor enthusiast, I found this lake perfect for a 4-5 day stay. It offers an amazing mix of hiking trails, cable cars, and breathtaking mountain scenery. However, if you're only here to see the main attractions—Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen, and Interlaken—a weekend might be enough.

When I stayed in Brienzwiler, I noticed that the nearby military airport can be quite noisy during the day with its takeoffs and landings (So be mindful when staying too far east of Brienz.). Luckily, there was no noise on the weekend, and I absolutely loved my stay there.

In my personal opinion, Interlaken has become very touristic over the years, so I prefer Brienz or any of the other villages, which still feel a bit less commercialized. If you’re looking for a livelier atmosphere, though, Interlaken could still be a good option. The train journey from Lucerne to Interlaken/Brienz is absolutely amazing—and the car ride is just as stunning.

4. Lake Lugano – A Taste of Mediterranean Switzerland

View over Lake Lugano and Lugano city

What’s Special About It?

Lake Lugano is a blend of Swiss and Italian cultures, offering a Mediterranean vibe with palm trees, mild weather, and gourmet cuisine.

Why Visit?

  • Explore the city of Lugano, known for its shopping and restaurants.

  • Hike Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views.

  • Stroll along the Parco Ciani lakeside park.

  • Visit charming villages like Morcote and Gandria.

  • Visit the town of Como (Italy) and explore the stunning Lake Como.

  • Discover the famous Valle Verzasca, home to the picturesque Ponte dei Salti and the 'James Bond: GoldenEye' bungee jump at the dam.

  • The charming villages of Ascona and Locarno on Lago Maggiore are just a short distance away

  • Explore the three castles of Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site."

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lugano: The Villa Principe Leopoldo offers luxury and lake views.- We once stayed at Hotel Colibrì, which offers an amazing view over Lake Lugano (see the picture above). I found the rate quite affordable, especially considering the breathtaking view.

  • Morcote: Swiss Diamond Hotel provides a serene escape.

  • Locarno, Ascona or Como as alternatives (not on Lake Lugano)

Personal Note:

The Lake Lugano area is my personal favorite, and we visit regularly. Over the years, we’ve stayed in various towns, including Lugano, Locarno, Ascona, Bellinzona (not on Lake Lugano), and Como (Italy). Each town has its own unique charm and flair.

What I love most about Lake Lugano is its blend of Italian charm and Swiss organization, creating the perfect experience. Thanks to its southern location, the climate is mild. While it might be cold and gloomy on the northern side of the Alps, the weather around Lake Lugano can be beautiful, even in autumn and spring.

I recommend staying in or near Lugano and taking day trips to Monte Brè, the Valle Verzasca, and Como in Italy. Together with Lage Geneva, Lake Lugano is for me the best lake to vacation on in switzerland.

5. Lake Constance – Where Three Countries Meet

What’s Special About It?

Lake Constance (Bodensee) borders Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, offering unique cultural experiences. It’s ideal for cycling, water sports, and exploring quaint towns.

Why Visit?

  • Visit the medieval town of Stein am Rhein.

  • Cycle along the famous Bodensee bike route.

  • Visit the city of Lindau, a charming island city on the lake.

  • Explore Friedrichshafen, home of the Zeppelin.

  • Relax on the serene Mainau Island, renowned for its stunning gardens.

  • Visit Konstanz and Bregenz

  • Visit europes largest waterfall, the Rheinfall

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lindau or Friedrichshafen (both Germany)

  • Stein am Rhein: Hotel Chlosterhof for historical charm.

Personal take: The towns on or near Lake Constance are perfect for day trips from Zurich or Basel. I’m not entirely sure why, but I wouldn’t stay here for more than a long weekend. Perhaps it’s because the German side of the lake has become quite pricey (though still cheaper than Switzerland) or because the area is quite far from the real mountains, giving it more of a 'lake' vibe than a 'mountain' one. It might also be because I visited this region often when I was younger and got a bit tired of it.

That said, there are some fantastic attractions nearby: the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall; the charming medieval town of Stein am Rhein; Lindau, with its picturesque island setting; and St. Gallen in Switzerland, which is well worth a visit.

If you’re staying overnight, I definitely recommend staying on the German side, either in Lindau or Friedrichshafen.

6. Walensee – The Swiss Fjord

What’s Special About It?

Walensee, often called the “Swiss Fjord,” boasts dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It’s perfect for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet.

Why Visit?

  • Hike the scenic trail to Seerenbach Falls.

  • Take a boat ride across the lake for stunning views.

  • Enjoy water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking.

  • Visit the car-free village of Quinten, accessible only by boat or hike.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Walenstadt: Resort Walensee for a relaxing getaway.

  • Quinten: Stay in a rustic chalet for a secluded escape.

7. Lake Silvaplana – Paradise for Adventure Lovers

What’s Special About It?

Lake Silvaplana is a windsurfing and kitesurfing hotspot, thanks to its consistent Maloja winds. It’s surrounded by the stunning Engadine Valley, offering endless outdoor activities.

Why Visit?

  • Windsurf or kitesurf on the lake.

  • Enjoy world-class hiking and biking trails.

  • Relax in the chic alpine village of St. Moritz nearby.

  • Marvel at the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Silvaplana: Nira Alpina offers contemporary luxury and mountain views.

  • St. Moritz: Suvretta House combines elegance and alpine charm.

What is The Best Lake to Vacation on in Switzerland?

This is my personal ranking: I enjoy a good mix of outdoor activities, small to medium-sized towns, and the chance to swim in the lake or simply relax.

  1. Lake Lugano – I love the blend of Italian charm and Swiss organization.

  2. Lake Geneva – There’s always something happening around Lake Geneva, making it lively and exciting.

  3. Lake Silvaplana – While the lake is small, the Engadine region, where it’s located, offers plenty of activities, from hiking and biking to relaxing.

  4. Lake Lucerne – For many, it’s the number one choice, but for me, it ranks fourth—I’m not entirely sure why.

  5. Lake Brienz – It’s beautiful but often crowded with mainstream tourists.

  6. Walensee – Perfect for a day trip, but it might be challenging to spend a week or a long weekend here.

  7. Lake Constance – It offers plenty of activities, but the German side is nearly as expensive as Switzerland. Additionally, I find it a bit far from the Swiss Alps, even though you can still see them.2
